Centennial School Fire Update December 13, 2019

The recent fire in classroom 8 at Centennial School has resulted in the school being closed until January 6, 2020.  The fire resulted in extensive water, fire and smoke damage to classroom 8, Grade 4-5N.  The remainder of the facility was exposed to smoke and particulates.  At this time, students and staff are still not allowed to enter the school to collect belongings or for any other reason due to health and safety concerns.

All classes have been cancelled, however Junior High School students may attend École Queen Elizabeth School for their option classes.  Grade 7 & 8 parents will have to provide transportation to and from École Queen Elizabeth School.

All before and after school activities that were planned between now and January 6, 2020 have been cancelled.

The Centennial School Staff have been relocated to CB McMurdo Center until December 20, 2019.  Due to the fire resulting in loss of instructional days, staff are working on adjusting unit plans and year plans so that curriculum will be effectively covered from January 6 2020 to the end of the school year.

School staff would like to remind students and families that they are able to access learning activities from home.  Lessons can be accessed from IXL Math, RAZ Kids and Google Classroom.  IXL Math allows up to one hour of practice time daily, as a guest without a user name and log-on password.  Google Classroom can be accessed through student Gmail accounts.  Here are the web links:

The Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin would like to support our families by offering childcare at the downtown location 5109 – 51 Street.  If you require childcare, please contact Justin Wyeclaw at Boys and Girls Club 780-352-4643 to inquire.

Please refer to the school and division websites for further updates.  If there are any other updates we will notify Centennial School families through School Messenger via email or text.

On behalf of the Centennial School staff, I would like to thank everyone for the support that has been offered.  We wish our school community a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing everyone in the new year.

Sincerely,

David Luck

Centennial School

Principal
